Repeat (a)-(d) 5 times, then check the reservoir. just snug - don't get muscley with it since the bleeders are pretty soft and it is easy to round them.ĭ) pedal person hears 'closed' and releases the brake pedal and says, 'up' it starts with the bleed nipple closed and the brake pedal in its normal 'up' position.Ī) i open the brake bleeder and say 'open'ī) pedal person hears 'open' and pushes AND !HOLDS! brake pedal down and says, 'down'Ĭ) i close brake bleeder and say 'closed'. a small plastic soda bottle works well.ħ) now the fun part i use a 4 step process to bleed. then put ~2' of clear hose from bleed nipple to suitable container at the brake caliper farthest from the master cylinder/reservoir. do all 4 to get it out of the way.Ħ) i usually use the box end of a wrench to open/close the nipples, so you should put the wrench over the bleed nipple first. just loosen it a 1/2 turn, and snug it back up - just want to prevent rounding it off using a wrench if its crusted up. refill with new to the top of the reservoir (beyond the 'full' line is fine)ĥ) use a ratchet / socket to break free the bleed nipple. DOT4 is backwards compatible with 3, so anything that specs 3 can be fed 4.ġ) jack vehicle up and put on jack stands.ģ) have a 'pedal pusher' (person) in the drivers seatĤ) open brake fluid reservoir and suction out all the old fluid that you can. just did one and had what should have been lightly golden brake fluid was something that looked like horrific chocolate milkshake.ĭOT4 fluid will usually stay functional for a longer period of time (wet boiling point is higher than 3). ![]() While you're at it, if you've got a hydraulic clutch, do the same for the clutch fluid. repeat for 3 & 4, making sure you don't let the reservoir suck air along the way or else you have to start over. move to the 2nd farthest caliper and bleed until fresh. bleed from the farthest caliper first until you get fresh new fluid coming out. turkey baster / vet syringe out the reservoir, refill with new. by the time you see a leak, its way past critical.ĭo yourself and anyone who rides in your vehicles a favor, change your brake fluid every couple years. also, 'wet' brake fluid will rust your hard brake lines from the inside. if the fluid boils while you are hitting the brake pedal, you will get a 'soft' pedal - it may go to the floor. as you said, it absorbs water, which lowers its boiling point. the big issue is changing it frequently enough. On a street driven vehicle, almost any DOT3 or 4 fluid will be more than capable. fluids and filters are almost always available somewhere else for less with higher quality. i pretty much buy nothing from them since they are largely overpriced and far from the best (and in many cases, even middling). ![]() Brake fluid is one thing i absolutely would NOT buy from a dealer. ![]()
